Two weeks ago I got a call from my doctor, who I’d gone to see the day before because I’d been feeling worn out and was losing weight, and wasn’t sure why.

He was brief: “Amit, you’ve got Acute Leukemia. You need to enter treatment right away.”

I was terrified. I packed a backpack full of clothes, went to the hospital as he’d instructed, and had transfusions through the night to allow me to take a flight home at 7am the next day. I Googled acute leukemia as I lay in my hospital bed, learning that if it hadn’t been caught, I’d have died within weeks.

I have a couple more months of chemo to go, then the next step is a bone marrow transplant. As Jay and Tony describe below, minorities are severely underrepresented in the bone marrow pool, and I need help.

A few ways to help:

If you’re South Asian, get a free test by mail. You rub your cheeks with a cotton swab and mail it back. It’s easy.

If you’re in NYC, you can go to this event my friends are putting on.

If you know any South Asians (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka), please point ‘em to the links above. Thank you.

Back in grad school I found Amit via a wee little company he had started called Photojojo. Since then I’ve had the privilege of following him along a most amazing adventure of watching PJ truly blossom into something great, learning so much along the way. I feel like Amit has helped me so much in my own career, life and development over the past 5 years, and now it’s really hard to see him - such an unstoppable and positive force - facing some serious challenges. I feel confident though, that the impact he has created on every community he has touched - both online and off - will be strong enough to find this awesome dude what he needs: a bone marrow donor. So - get to it - spread the word.

As we get the ball rolling in Boston and continue to grow in Philadelphia, we’re looking for instructors who love geeking out on web development as much as we do.

If you have the knowledge and the confidence to lead a group of smart, determined women on any of the following topics, we should talk!

HTML / CSS

JavaScript / jQuery

PHP / MySQL

Ajax

Photoshop

Git

WordPress

Drupal

Graphic Design

Business (as it pertains to the web, ‘course :-)

Many of the courses already have curriculum created, so your job is just to come in and teach it. For an example of our material, checkout the notes from our first class in the HTML/CSS series. Other topics have not been run yet, and you’ll have the opportunity to help us develop that material (compensation will be higher).

Class commitments are usually a couple hours, one night a week or occasionally a half an afternoon on a weekend.

If this sounds like fun to you, send us some information about yourself and your background to instructors@webstartwomen.com.

And, if you don’t fit the description above, but you know a woman who does, please let her know! The more talented, awesome instructors we can find, the more classes we can run, and the quicker more women can start coding their ideas into reality. :-)

It feels really cool to have built an app that, without fail, brings me so much joy every time it does it’s job.

Photojojo’s Photo Time Capsule, designed and conceived by Amit Gupta, implemented by myself and Rosie Daniels - sends you emails twice a month with a selection of your Flickr photos from the same time last year. It’s infrequent enough that it’s a pleasure and surprise whenever they arrive, and unlike a lot of persistent “apps”, I never grow tired of it.

This is an Excel function. It also would work in Microsoft Access. The factory is using Excel or Access to store all the logos for the different jeans they make and then print them onto leather. This is what happens when there is a bug in their software.
